Truth or Consequences is a spa city and the county seat of Sierra County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,475. It is commonly known within New Mexico as T or C. Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, the title of a popular NBC radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs won the honor. Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May for the next fifty years. This event was called "Fiesta" and included a beauty contest, a parade, and a stage show. The city still celebrates Fiesta each year on the first weekend of May. The parade generally features area celebrities such as the Hatch Chile Queen. Fiesta also features a dance in Ralph Edwards Park.
Geronimo Springs Museum contains the history of Sierra County, New Mexico. From the mammoth and mastodon skulls and the world-class collection of prehistoric Mimbres pottery to the Apache, Hispanic, military, mining, ranching, and cultural exhibits, the Museum is a fascinating complex of historical artifacts. Each of several rooms represents a specific subject of history, with displays and artifacts interpreted so that the viewer can understand the items exhibited.
La Paloma is located in the historical district of Truth or Consequences. We operate one of the three bath houses that provide private soaking in free flowing pools. Our water flows up directly from the source through the ground into our five rock-bottomed pools. No pumping or pipes are necessary! La Paloma, formerly Marshall Hot Springs, was the first car park in T or C. The rooms were constructed for housing for the workers building the dam at Elephant Butte Lake. The dam was completed in 1922 and the “cabins” were then moved to the present site. Continuing renovation and upgrades have been made over the years to provide a comfortable homey setting for guests. Please come and visit this historic site even if you choose to stay or soak elsewhere. Our goal is to provide a quiet and serene space to escape from the demands of every day life. Stop in, take a deep breath, and relax! Generous soaking time is included in overnight stays. The bath house is open to the public from 10 am until 10 pm seven days a week.
The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum houses exhibits relating to the everyday lives of the citizens of Deming and the Mimbres Valley. They include paintings, furniture, period rooms, antique machines and tools, toys, dolls, clothes, vehicles, farm equipment, war memorabilia, photographs, Indian artifacts, gems and geodes, and an important collection of Mimbres pottery. The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum was named for the City of Deming, Luna County, and the Mimbres Valley. It is housed in the old National Guard Armory, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a State Historic Site.
