Tonopah Mining Park

View Underground at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park! The "Underground Adventure" is open! The Tonopah Historic Mining Park is proud to have received many “Best Of Nevada” Readers’ Awards from Nevada Magazine.  Thanks to those readers, we were named “BestMuseum in Rural Nevada” for six consecutive years, 2002 through 2007.  We were also the recipient of the 2003 and 2004 Governor’s Award for Tourism Development. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park is located on the site of the original mining claims that started the rush to Tonopah, making it “Queen of the Silver Camps”.  Jim and Belle Butler’s strike in 1900 brought the United States into the 20th Century, and many of the mining processing techniques developed during that time are still being used today. The park encompasses portions of four of the original major mining companies and covers more than 100 acres.  This rich history is brought to life through preserved and restored equipment and buildings, historic exhibits, video presentations (in our on-site theater), and a self-guided tour.  All of the buildings located on the property are open for our visitors to enjoy.  You can experience for yourself how it was to work in a turn-of-the-century mine. The grounds are constantly changing.  New exhibits are added frequently and restoration of existing buildings is ongoing.  Your membership fees and donations go directly toward expanding our collections and improving your experience. Mountain bike access is now available in the newly-opened trails system. Our latest addition is a six-passenger ATV.  Call us at (775) 482-9274 for more information about this vehicle and its availability for tours.

Central Nevada Museum

Silver was discovered here in 1900, which sparked one of the biggest mining booms in the state. Many of the town's buildings, such as the Mizpah Hotel and the Nye County Courthouse, were built in the early 20th century. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park, on the hillside above the town, offers a chance to explore the actual mines that created this mining juggernaut. Tonopah's Central Nevada Museum contains displays describing not only local mining history but also other cultural and social aspects of the region. Located about halfway between Reno and Las Vegas, Tonopah is a perfect place to stay while enjoying central Nevada's recreational activities including rock hunting, hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, off·roading and hunting. Our rich history, which includes mining, ranching and pioneer life, the influence of the Western Shoshone, who were here before us, is presented in our state-of-the-art museum. In addition, we explore and present the geology and plant life of this region.
