Laveen is an "urban village" within the city of Phoenix in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, situated eight miles (13 km) southwest of Downtown Phoenix between South Mountain and the confluence of the Gila and Salt rivers. Parts of Laveen constitute an unincorporated community in Maricopa County, while the remainder falls within the city limits of Phoenix, constituting the city's "Laveen Village". Laveen Village is split between District 7 and District 8, both notable as minority-majority districts for the city. Although Laveen has been home to "pastoral alfalfa, cotton, and dairy farms" since the 1880s, housing and commercial developments have been increasingly urbanizing the area.

The Phoenix Zoo is home to more than 1,300 animals including 200 endangered species and participates in 37 Species Survival Plans (SSPs) to breed and maintain endangered species populations in captivity. At the Phoenix Zoo we are dedicating a portion of our efforts to a sanctuary for animals that need our help because they have no other place to live. The animals you'll see in Sanctuary include White Rhinos, Asian Elephants, Mexican gray wolf, Cheetahs, Arabian oryx, and a host of other animals. These animals are part of Sanctuary for various reasons. Some of the animals are threatened with extinction and in need of captive-breeding programs. They will live here and produce offspring that will go on to restore wild populations. Our three Asian elephants and other animals that have behavioral problems will get a chance for a better life through the special attention given in Sanctuary. Animals retired from breeding programs and animals that are not needed for breeding programs get lifelong quality care. Sanctuary also includes animals that are being rehabilitated for return to the wild or animals that have an illness or injury that keeps them from ever living a normal life if returned to the wild. There are Sanctuary animals located throughout the zoo; however we have decided to create specific space within the zoo for a large portion of the Sanctuary animals. The back loop of the Zoo, from Desert Lives to the Crossroads Snack bar, is dedicated to our Sanctuary animals.

MIM offers a shared experience of the history of musical instruments throughout the world. The 200,000 square-foot space is bright and open, providing guests with a warm and comfortable environment. Guests are introduced to MIM through the Orientation Gallery on the first floor showcasing the artistry, diversity, and movement of musical instruments from around the world. On the second floor, guests can venture into different regions of the world to discover the complete orchestra of a Chinese opera, a big-band jazz ensemble, or all the instruments of a mariachi band, among others. The collection includes instruments from around two hundred countries and territories in the world. Some larger countries such as India, China, Russia, the United States, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and others have multiple displays with subsections for different types of ethnic, folk, and tribal music. The instruments have both historic and artistic merit and many are more than fifty years old. MIM’s goal is to acquire instruments that have been used for folk and tribal occasions wherever possible.
