South Dakota State Capitol

The South Dakota State Capitol is the state capitol building of the U.S. state of South Dakota. Housing the South Dakota State Legislature, it is located in the state capital of Pierre at 500 East Capitol Avenue. The building houses the offices of most state officials, including the Governor of South Dakota. The building was constructed between 1905 and 1910. The plans for the building were designed by the Minneapolis architectural office of C.E. Bell and M.S. Detwiler, who gave the building similar features to the Montana State Capitol in Helena, Montana. The planning and construction cost was almost $1,000,000

State Historical Society/Cultural Heritage Center

The South Dakota State Historical Society, first organized as the Old Settlers Association of Dakota Territory in 1862, established its official relationship with state government in 1901 through the former Department of History. Originally housed in the state capitol, the Society moved in 1932 to the newly completed Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Building across the street. In 1989 South Dakota celebrated its centennial and to mark the anniversary and showcase the state's history, the Cultural Heritage Center was built as the new headquarters for the Society. Through the years, state government reorganizations have shaped and reshaped the Society into the vigorous organization of today. South Dakota National Guard Museum

In 1862, twenty-seven years before statehood, Governor Janyne petitioned the War Department for authority to raise two companies of soldiers. These soldiers would act as a territorial defense while the Active Army was fighting in the Civil War. The first company to muster in was Company A, First Dakota Cavalry in Yankton and the second was Company B, First Dakota Cavalry in Sioux City. The First Dakota Cavalry are the ancestors of the South Dakota National Guard. Here at the South Dakota National Guard Museum we honor our Guard members both past and present. Stop by today and learn of the history and hero's of our South Dakota Guard.
