It began long ago when rain drops accumulated in tiny depressions and started to erode the granite. As more rock eroded, more water accumulated, leading to more erosion until, as time passed, two hollowed-out eye sockets formed and the rock began to resemble a skull. Located along the main east-west park road, Skull Rock is a favorite stop for park visitors. A parking spot is located just across the road from the rock.
The botanical gardens of this park offer great opportunities to see desert vegetation.
The Hauser Geode Beds are located south west of Blythe off of Interstate 10 and then Wiley's Well Road South. It takes about 1 hour from Blythe to get there. About 30 minutes on paved road and then 30 minutes on dirt road. Known to rock hounds for many years, the Hauser geode beds have produced some very beautiful geodes of varied types. Some geodes are lined with amethyst crystals, others have white or black calcite crystals . A geode is a sphere shaped rock which contains a hollow cavity lined with crystals. A geode which is completely filled with small compact crystal formations such as agate or jasper is called a nodule or Thunder Egg. The Hauser Geode Beds were discovered in 1937 by Joel Hauser, a Blythe Native. As there were no roads in the Black Hills area, Mr. Hauser used his Model A Ford that he paid $37.50 for to explore this region. One day while trying to drive around the Black Hills the Hauser beds was discovered. There are several areas to find geodes in, the Hauser beds, the Straw beds and the Potato Patch, for details on exact locations see the maps.
Rice became noted for its Rice Shoe Tree, a lone tamarisk on a turnout just south of the highway. For reasons unknown, it became customary for travelers on Highway 62 (also known as Rice Road) to and from the Colorado River to hang an old shoe on the tree's branches. The tree was featured on California's Gold, a PBS program hosted by Huell Howser. The tree burned to the ground in 2003 in a fire of suspicious origin, after which a 'shoe garden' replaced it; a fence on which people hang shoes instead. Travelers still stop to spell their names on the nearby Arizona and California Railroad right-of-way with the multi-colored volcanic rock used as ballast. Hand-assembled graffiti lines the railroad for the entire distance that it parallels Highway 62.
The campground is a single loop through a stand of mature cedars, Ponderosa pine, oaks, and a variety of other conifers. This overstory of trees provides lots of shade for the camp sites. Although not a group campground, well cleared, spacious sites make this campground nicely suited for large groups. DIRECTIONS: From Idyllwild, CA, take State Rt. 243 north 4.3 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign and go 0.1 miles to another campground sign (Forest Rt. 4S02). Turn left at sign and go 0.7 miles to a "Y" intersection and campground sign. Bear left and go 1.6 miles to campground.Visit Dark Canyon Campground
The deeply weathered summit of Mount San Jacinto stands 10,834 feet above sea level, and is the second highest mountain range in Southern California. No more than a two hour drive from either Los Angeles or San Diego, the mountain's magnificent granite peaks, subalpine forests, and fern-bordered mountain meadows offer a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy a scenic, high-country wilderness area. The park offers two drive-in campgrounds near the town of Idyllwild. Most of the park is a designated wilderness area enjoyed by hikers and backpackers.Visit Mt. San Jacinto State Park
