Whilst on tour you will be accompanied by two knowledgeable guides who take care of everything technical, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Informative interpretation boards allow the guides to support a story of place that brings meaning to the world around them. We show what happens in nature (Natural Step Framework), what Ziptrek does to be more environmentally aware and how we can all do our bit within our conditions.

It turns out you don’t have to go all the way to Europe to see historic castles, as New Zealand has one of its own on the top of the Otago Peninsula. Only one, mind you, as you won’t find any building quite like this in the rest of the country. Larnach Castle was built in 1871, and a tour of the grounds and castle will evoke all sorts of wistful Victorian sentiments that you didn’t even know you were capable of. Especially if you know the backstory.
The castle was built for a politician, William Larnach, whose life was full of tragedy. He lost two wives, the first at 38 to a stroke, and the second to blood poisoning mysteriously at the same age. Then his daughter died of typhoid at 21. And if that’s not enough for one man to cope with, he discovered his son was having an affair with his third wife so poor William ended his life. During the world wars the castle was a mental hospital, and now it’s a majestic place to visit.
Brilliantly restored by the Barker Family, the castle and surrounding stunning grounds offers a grand tour (of one hour), luxury accommodation, and two dining options - The Ballroom Cafe, in the historic ballroom, or outdoor cafe.
Here you can have the chance to see huge adult albatross flying, courting, nesting; chicks hatching in January and growing through the year. It’s a breath-taking sight to see the huge and remarkable bird soaring over your head.
The Royal Albatross Centre offers wildlife tours on Taiaroa Head where you can view Royal Albatross, Little Blue Penguins and many other seabirds from their purpose-built viewing areas. It also features an interactive gallery, superb cafe, gift shop & historic Fort Taiaroa.

The Royal Albatross Centre is owned by the Otago Peninsula Trust, whose objective is the protection and enhancement of the Otago Peninsula. Your support helps the New Zealand wildlife thrive.
There’s great swimming when the surf’s off and good surf when it’s on. And when you don’t feel like either there’s a small hot spring that flows into the sand at the right side of the beach that you can dig a hole and warm up in. Being 16 kms from the nearest town, Owaka, camping is possible with DOC sites dotted around. And occasionally you’ll be sharing your overnight with a Lion Seal who come ashore at night.Visit Purakaunui Bay
