Highly polished, native rimu floors, high ceilings and crystal chandeliers, this grand old Victorian lady hosts a cafe and is owned by Nelson City Council so you can rubber neck its classic features such as deeply moulded sash windows and fire surrounds as well as ornate balustrading on the timber staircase to your heart's content without paying an admission fee. A self-tour garden map details the extensive sheltered, private gardens surrounding the house, including its historic specimen trees. There's a great view past the Cathedral's tower to Tasman Bay if you're having a picnic on its sloping lawns.
Nelson's regional museum located in the heart of Nelson features a regional history gallery downstairs, along with temporary exhibitions upstairs. The museum's research facility is located in Isel Park in Stoke.
At our central city location, the Lower Gallery leads visitors through an exploration of Te Tau Ihu, top of the South Island from Tasman Bay to Golden Bay. This treasure-filled exhibition focuses on the region’s facinating history and identity, offering the opportunity for hours of discovery.
The upper level and gallery are used for exhibitions with local, topical, cultural or international themes. A vibrant stained-glass window featuring New Zealand’s unique creatures and plants may be admired from the top floor.
