Whakaari / White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano, situated 48 km (30 mi) from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. It is New Zealand's most active cone volcano, and has been built up by continuous volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years. The nearest mainland towns are Whakatane and Tauranga. White Island has been in a nearly continuous stage of smoking at least since it was 'discovered' by James Cook in 1769. The island is roughly circular, about 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter, and rises to a height of 321 m (1,053 ft) above sea level. It covers an area of approximately 325 ha (800 acres). The exposed island is only the peak of a much larger submarine mountain, which rises up to 1,600 m (5,249 ft) above the nearby seafloor. Sulphur mining was attempted but was abandoned in 1914 after a lahar killed all of the site's workers. The main activities on the island now are guided tours and scientific research.

1989 was the year it all began. Doug and Mike Tamaki forged a turning point for tourism in Rotorua and forever changed the way people from around the world experienced cultural storytelling. Two kiwi cowboys doing things a bit differently. From old school buses to hot-rod Harleys and roundabout sing-alongs, a new storyline was unfolding and the families, couples, the globetrotters from near and far were all on board the one-of-a-kind Tamaki Māori Village experience. Now 30 years later, Tamaki has become an iconic brand in tourism – a leading force that pioneers and inspires through authentic and meaningful cultural experiences that the world continues to applaud and celebrate. Tamaki Māori Village is the most award-winning cultural attraction in New Zealand and was voted the 7th best experience in the world by TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice award in 2018.
Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption of Mt Tarawera on 10 June 1886 was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters. For over four hours, rocks, ash, and mud bombarded the peaceful village of Te Wairoa, ending more than 150 lives and destroying the eighth wonder of the world: The Pink and White Terraces. But the story doesn’t end there…
Thanks to the sensitive redevelopment by three generations of the Smith family, The Buried Village of Te Wairoa is now one of New Zealand’s most-visited historical sites, providing visitors a picture of what life was like at the village before, during, and after the eruption.
Established in 1931, The Buried Village of Te Wairoa features an award-winning museum, with excavated objects over 80 years old, and an extensive archaeological site set in 12 acres of meadow and native bush. Detailed signage provides a rich narrative of the people who visited and lived in the village. Enjoy the waterfall trail walking path.
