Pukekohe is a town in the Auckland Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Located at the southern edge of the Auckland Region, it is approximately 50 kilometres south of Auckland City, between the southern shore of the Manukau Harbour and the mouth of the Waikato River. The hills of Pukekohe and nearby Bombay Hills form the natural southern limit of the Auckland region. Pukekohe is located within the political boundaries of the Auckland Council, following the abolition of the Franklin District Council on 1 November 2010. With a population of 29,800 (June 2016), Pukekohe is the 18th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the second largest in the Auckland Region behind Auckland itself. The Māori word puke-kohe means "hill of the kohekohe", New Zealand's native mahogany.

Places to Visit near Pukekohe

Rangitoto Island

The popular summit track climbs through the world's largest pohutukawa forest. The peak is 259 metres above sea level, so you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

Auckland War Memorial Museum - Tāmaki Paenga Hira

Auckland War Memorial Museum is New Zealand's first Museum. The Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people. The Museum is a war memorial for the province of Auckland and holds one of New Zealand's top three heritage libraries. It has pre-eminent Māori and Pacific collections, significant natural history resources and major social and military history collections, as well as decorative arts and pictorial collections.

Sky Tower

At 328 metres, it is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand and offers breath-taking views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction.

Travel up in the glass-fronted lifts to one of the three spectacular viewing platforms, or for more thrills and excitement, SkyWalk round the pergola at 192 metres up or SkyJump off the Tower!

The Sky Tower also offers various dining experiences to satisfy every palate. Peter Gordon’s chic and elegant restaurant – The Sugar Club, offers the finest dining experience. Orbit restaurant is Auckland’s only 360-degree revolving restaurant and boasts stunning views of Auckland city. If you want relaxed dining, the Sky Café is located on level 50 (now in partnership with Kapiti Ice Cream, another iconic kiwi brand).

The Sky Tower is one of New Zealand's most exhilarating and spectacular tourist attractions, you will be amazed at what you can see and do under one roof!

Piha Beach

Piha is only one of a number of bays and beaches in the area, all wild surf beaches, some more accessible than others. While the main beaches – Piha, North Piha and Karekare – attract big crowds in the summer, on a wild day you could be the only person on the beach, and only small numbers make their way to the beaches where it takes more effort to get there, such as White’s Beach, Anawhata and The Gap, and you can only gaze in awe at cliff-locked Mercer Bay.
