Places to Visit near Auckland Region

Sky Tower

At 328 metres, it is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand and offers breath-taking views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction.

Travel up in the glass-fronted lifts to one of the three spectacular viewing platforms, or for more thrills and excitement, SkyWalk round the pergola at 192 metres up or SkyJump off the Tower!

The Sky Tower also offers various dining experiences to satisfy every palate. Peter Gordon’s chic and elegant restaurant – The Sugar Club, offers the finest dining experience. Orbit restaurant is Auckland’s only 360-degree revolving restaurant and boasts stunning views of Auckland city. If you want relaxed dining, the Sky Café is located on level 50 (now in partnership with Kapiti Ice Cream, another iconic kiwi brand).

The Sky Tower is one of New Zealand's most exhilarating and spectacular tourist attractions, you will be amazed at what you can see and do under one roof!

Piha Beach

Piha is only one of a number of bays and beaches in the area, all wild surf beaches, some more accessible than others. While the main beaches – Piha, North Piha and Karekare – attract big crowds in the summer, on a wild day you could be the only person on the beach, and only small numbers make their way to the beaches where it takes more effort to get there, such as White’s Beach, Anawhata and The Gap, and you can only gaze in awe at cliff-locked Mercer Bay.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Reserve

See a variety of native birds on the walks on this pest-free island, as well as views of the surrounding islands.

Tiritiri Matangi means "looking to the wind" or "wind tossing about". The island is officially called Tiritiri Matangi Scientific Reserve, and is one of the most successful conservation projects in the world.

Unwanted predators have been eradicated, and the once-pastoral island has been replanted with native trees. Rare native birds as well as tuatara have been returned to its now-safe and restored habitats.

You can visit this open sanctuary, and see some of New Zealand's most endangered birds in the wild including takahē, kōkako, saddleback/tīeke and hihi/stitchbird.

This world renowned island sanctuary attracts more than 20,000 visitors annually.

The island is managed by DOC in partnership with Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi – a voluntary community group and major contributor to the success of Tiritiri Matangi as an open sanctuary.

Rangitoto Island

The popular summit track climbs through the world's largest pohutukawa forest. The peak is 259 metres above sea level, so you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.
