Trick or treat! From ghost towns, prisons and haunted bays, there are endless scares and adventures to be had this Halloween. Are you brave enough to plan your next campervan hire around some spooky New Zealand destinations?

The Forgotten World Highway

Our first destination is so spooky that it’s even called the ‘Ghost Town’. Home to just 10 residents, you can find Tangarakau or Ghost Town off of the Forgotten World Highway. This small town previously had a population of 1,200. Today there isn’t much in sight aside from a small campground, where you can park your campervan hire.

Napier Prison

Built in 1862, the Napier prison was also an orphanage and a psychiatric unit. To this day, there are reports of supernatural activity. Visit the prison and go on a ghost tour where you can relive tales from former residents and inmates. Experience the paranormal activity for yourself.

Larnach Castle

Located in the South Island, Larnach Castle is New Zealand’s only castle. During the World Wars it was a mental hospital, and has seen some horrible incidents. The castle has also featured on a few TV shows, reporting on the paranormal activity that takes place inside. Would you visit this spooky spot?

Spirits Bay

Campervan hire in New Zealand can take you to so many incredible destinations. And, next on our list is Spirits Bay. This is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful spots, however, it is also known in Māori mythology as the place where the dead gather before they can move on. There have been numerous reports of the spiritual sightings too. We still think it’s one of New Zealand’s most beautiful destinations.

These are just a few of New Zealand’s most daring destinations. Hire a campervan and start ticking off some of these spooky spots. There are still plenty more to uncover, these are just a few to get you started.
