Winter getaway: Rotorua, Mount Ruapehu and Taupo
My favourite motorhome trip would be when I did a 5 day trip during winter to go to the ski feilds at Mount Ruapehu.
I drove down to Rotorua where I spent my first night at the Rotorua top 10 holiday park. This park had been one of my highlights with the Thermal pool that stayed open pretty late and just a stone’s throw away from the popular night markets where there is great food!
We then made our way down to Whakapapa holiday park and the views on the way were spectacular with white-snow everywhere! The holiday park had prime location to the ski fields and they also provided a shuttle to and from (payment is required for the shuttle). There was nothing better than waking up in the motorhome, looking out and seeing snow fall. Getting on that shuttle, spending a full day out, having fun. Then coming back to your motorhome and having a nice hot shower with a nice hot cup of tea to end your day.
From there we made our way up to Taupo and stayed the night at the Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort. It has to be one of my favourite holiday parks and I highly recommend spending a night/day here. If you are needing something to do to kill time, visit the Huka prawn farm! Never thought catching ( or trying to catch) prawns would be so fun! Our short winter getaway unfortunately came to an end after returning back to Auckland but it was one to remember!
Driving during the winter is a different experience. I recommend everyone does a winter trip when they visit New Zealand.
