As Kiwis, we’re proud of how green, clean, safe and beautiful our country is. It’s an amazing place, and we want to keep it that way for future visitors and generations to come. So, join the movement and jump on board by becoming tidy Kiwis with us. Learn how to camp responsibly, especially when hiring a motorhome and care for New Zealand.

Camping with care

New Zealand is home to some of the greatest natural wonders and landscapes, that it can be hard to decide where to stay overnight. But, for the best experience we recommend staying at one of the incredible holiday parks or Department of Conservation campsites. You won’t be short on choice either as these are dotted all over the country. Stay by the beach, lake or surrounded by the lush green forest – the choice is yours!

Throughout New Zealand, there are more than 500 designated areas where you can freedom camp responsibly. This applies to you if you’re camping in a tent, motorhome or campervan on public property with little to no facilities.

Freedom camping is legal in New Zealand. However, the rules vary across the country. So, if you are planning on freedom camping, you must stay in the designated areas. These areas are all marked, indicating that this area is for freedom camping. If you do decide that you are going to freedom camp, please do so responsibly and care for our land. You can download the CamperMate app to help guide your next journey.

Dispose correctly & responsibly

As tidy Kiwis, we respect the environment and dispose of our waste. So, it’s important that when you’re camping in New Zealand,  that you take nothing but photos and memories and leave nothing but footprints behind. Leave the area clean and tidy and take all your rubbish away with you, or dispose of it correctly and responsibly.

You can learn more here, and understand the difference between general waste and recycling. Stay green & keep New Zealand clean.

How to use a dump station

Dump stations are essential when travelling in a motorhome or campervan. And, to protect our beautiful environment and public health, it’s important that you dispose of your waste properly. Below we have provided you with some helpful hints, and a video to show you how to remove your waste. The CamperMate app is also a great tool to help you find dump stations around New Zealand, as well as top spots for freedom camping. Download the App to get started.

Dump Stations:

  • Fresh Water – This is safe for you to drink/potable water.
  • Grey Water – Water from your sink or shower.
  • Black Water – Waste from your toilet (non-potable).
  • Toilet Cassette – This holds your black water and is a removable tank.
  • Grey Water/Black Water Evacuation Hose – This connects your tanks to the dump station.

Public loos & ethical poos

If for some reason you’re unable to use the toilet in your vehicle, it’s imperative that you use a public toilet. To highlight the importance of this, we’ve even put together a video on ethical poo

In fact, New Zealand has some of the coolest public toilets so why would you not want to use these?  Find out where to go when you need to go, or download the CamperMate app to locate public toilets nearby.

As New Zealanders, we pride ourselves on how green and clean we keep our land. So, we only hope that you will care for New Zealand for our future generations and visitors. Help us keep New Zealand beautiful.
