New Zealand is one of the very first countries to see the New Year. If you’re lucky to have made it all the way to New Zealand, you should celebrate the new year. Whether you’re looking for a night on the town, or you’ve hired a campervan in New Zealand, here’s a list of what to do on New Year’s Eve in New Zealand.

Celebrate in style

If you’re looking to celebrate in the city, pretty much all the major cities spare no expense. Each city puts on a celebration to commemorate a new year. Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Gisborne and Queenstown all feature fireworks, pub crawls, and live music throughout the entire night. The nightlife of all these cities, especially Queenstown, is on full display for the holiday, so if you’re looking to stay close to your city centre, you won’t ever run out of options.

Escape the big smoke

If you’re not looking to be in the city with large crowds, you could hire a campervan and take to the wilderness. You’ll be able to find a beach quite easily thanks to the compact size of the country, or you could look for stargazing points. You could try Mount John near Lake Tapako which hosts a Dark Sky Reserve which is prime for stargazing. You could also try Twizel which hosts Lord of the Rings scenery during the day. It is also a Dark Sky Reserve region. If you want to visit a national park, visit Aoraki Mount Cook National Park which has an amazing night view from The Alpine Centre Hillary Deck.

Try a festival

If you want to check out a festival specifically set up to celebrate the new year, you can do that too. Remember, the holidays in the Southern Hemisphere means summertime, so the weather is ideal. Rhythm and Vines festival in Gisborne has an incredible festival that features live music from international acts. The Highlife NYE festival just out of Auckland takes place in a vineyard. If you want to sample some of the greatest wines that New Zealand has to offer, that particular festival may be of interest to you. Keep in mind it is only open to those of New Zealand legal drinking age and requires compliance with a dress code. Finally, the GLO Festival in Rotorua is a multi-day festival which begins on New Year’s Eve and stretches to January 2. They feature live music and a large night market which offers some of the best cuisine available.
