New Zealand is an island country, and that means plenty of scenic drives down the coast for your road trip. With campervan hire in New Zealand, you are never bound to one place, and the amount of things to do and see are endless. Let’s take a look at just a few of the many things you can do on the West Coast of New Zealand.
First Stop: Westport
Westport is located on the northern west coast, just 40 minutes away from Wellington. Once gold town turned coal town, Westport is full of fun things to do and see. You can start with the coal mining museum to see what underground coal mining work is like. Or if you would like something more outdoorsy, Westpoint has that too. You can find everything from water sports like jet boating, rafting or kayaking to peaceful coastal walks and hikes in the forest.
In addition, make sure you check out the Cape Foulwind seal colony near Westport. At some points in the year, you may be able to catch a glimpse of around 100 New Zealand fur seals!
Second Stop: Greymouth
After Westport, take about an hour and a half drive down to the lovely town of Greymouth. It is the South Island’s biggest town on the west coast, so there are a lot of things to keep you entertained.
You can visit the local museum to learn about the town’s gold mining history. Or make a trip out of the local brewery for a tour and tasting session. Or if you are looking for something to do outdoors, why not go fishing, rafting, swimming at Rapahoe Beach or caving. You won’t be disappointed when you drive your campervan to Greymouth.
Third Stop: Franz Josef
The town of Franz Josef shares its name with a glacier that is just five kilometers away. You can get up close and personal by signing up for a guided glacier hiking tour. Or if you choose to get an aerial view of the glacier, that option is available too.
If just seeing Franz Josef Glacier is enough, Fox Glacier is a short 25 minute drive from Fran Josef. However, if you are ready for different adventures, Franz Josef has other things like rainforests, lakes, Glacier Hot Pools and waterfalls to enjoy.
Fourth Stop: Milford Sound
Milford Sound is a fiord in Fiordland National Park; which is also part of a World Heritage site. Make sure you stop by in your campervan since this is the only fiord you are able to access by road in New Zealand.
Milford Sound is a remote area with plenty of unspoilt cliffs, rainforests, and waterfalls. There are tours during the day and you can even spend the night. Take the opportunity to take a cruise, go kayaking or scuba diving in this serene location.
Pack up your things in a campervan hire, grab a map and get ready for a road trip of a lifetime. There is a lot to do on the West Coast of New Zealand, so it’s time to hit the road!
