While you may not have to be in fear of an active volcano in Auckland erupting, there are plenty of amazing sites to see from the past. The city is surrounded by over 40 dormant volcanoes, each with its own amazing characteristics both locals and tourists regularly visit. This is the tallest volcano you will be able to find in Auckland. For this reason, this is where you will find some of the most amazing views the city has to offer. Mount Eden stands approximately 196 meters high and was formed around 30,000 years ago.
You will be able to reach the top by either walking or riding a bike. Be ready to be amazed by the gigantic crater that is waiting for you.
Be careful with this. There’s a panoramic Wellington landmark with the same exact name. If you are looking for a volcanic experience, you will need to make sure you are in Devonport, not too far from North Head volcano.
You will be able to reach the top of Mount Victoria in around 20 minutes. This is where you will be able to find the best perspective on the North Shore Region, including Rangitoto and Auckland City. You will easily find underground tunnels taking you to both North Head and the surrounding areas.
Pukekawa’s most recent eruption is believed to have taken place around 85,000 to 115,000 years ago. This is the oldest park you will find in Auckland and home to one of the earliest eruptions anywhere in the region. While you are visiting Pukekawa, you will also want to spend some time checking out the Auckland Museum. You will also find plenty of Wintergardens and forested trails.
If you’re planning a trip visiting the popular volcanic sites in Auckland and the surrounding area, it may be a good idea to make the trip in a motorhome. This will provide an opportunity to experience the outdoors in a way a hotel room is unable to provide.
Spend some time mapping out where you can park overnight and have the shortest amounts of travel the next morning. With the sites and views you’re getting ready to experience, you will want to be as close to the outdoors as you can get.
