Weird Things to do in New Zealand

Written by Kimberly

New Zealand is a beautiful and quirky country filled with winding scenic roads. Campervan hire is one of the best ways to experience New Zealand. Not only is it cost effective, but you can camp in areas that provide easy access to your destinations. Now that you’ve made the proper decision of campervan hire, here are just a few of the weird things to do in New Zealand.

Tongariro Crossing – Tongariro National Park

Located in Tongariro National Park, Tongariro Crossing is a one-day hike through the Emerald and Blue Lakes, leading to Mount Ngauruhoe. Mount Ngauruhoe is an active volcano that was used to portray Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you are familiar with the Lord of the Rings movies, it can be a weird experience to stare at Mount Doom and think, “how beautiful.” Tongariro National Park has campervan parking, allowing for an early start to your journey. If only Sam and Frodo had the luxury of a campervan hire!

Bra Fence – Cardrona Valley

When discussing weird things to do in New Zealand, the bra fence in Cardrona Valley must be mentioned. Sometime during the holidays in late 1998 to early 1999, four bras were hung on the fence. The origins of this movement are mysterious and have yet to be revealed. Rather than simply removing the bras, local property owners left them there and the legend began to spread. The fence eventually had to change locations but it’s quite a site. The fence has thousands of bras hanging from it. The bras are now hung in memorial of those who have fought and are fighting breast cancer. So, load up the campervan, bring a bra and some cash to donate to the New Zealand Cancer Foundation.

The Springfield Doughnut

With the release of “The Simpsons Movie” in 2007, 20th Century Fox donated a giant statue of the doughnut to the New Zealand town of Springfield, to help promote the film. The town shares a name with the fictional hometown of the Simpsons. The attraction has accommodations allowing tourists to peek out of the middle of the concrete pastry for a picture. Smile for the camera and say “Doh!-Nut.”

Glowworms of the Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves of the North Island are different than typical caverns. What makes them weird is that they are completely illuminated by glowworms. Glowworms emit a chemical that reacts with oxygen and creates an illumination. The light is used to attract insects for the worms to eat. In this case, the light also works to attract tourists.
