Written by mighway

The short answer is yes. You can get to the Pinnacles in a vehicle. But, If you’re feeling really brave you could hire a campervan in New Zealand, park your motorhome and walk the track to the Pinnacles hut. So, how adventurous are you really feeling?

The Pinnacles

The Pinnacles is the highest point you’ll find in the Coromandel. For those making the hike, yes, it can be accomplished in a day. That being said, why would you want to make the 759m trip just to turn around and go back? You’re already there. Spend a night in the Pinnacles hut. Enjoy the scenery. Take it all in.

Making the hike

If you plan on making the hike to the top of the Pinnacles and back down, there are a few things you will need to know. For starters, this hike isn’t for the weak. No, you don’t need to be an expert or professional, but be prepared, time is required.

It’s not the distance that takes effort. It’s the rocks you will have to scramble over. There is very steep climbing. When you add all of this together, you’re going to be walking and climbing for quite a while.

Do it for the view

Rest assured, every ounce of energy for the climb is worth the view you will have upon reaching the top. There are very few places in the world where you will have the opportunity to surround yourself with so much beauty.

The hike itself is full of just as much beauty as reaching the top. There are swing bridges for crossing rivers. The trip takes you through subtropical forests full of beautiful fern trees. Before long you will be able to notice you’re elevation is rising.

Make sure you pack a lunch for the trip. You won’t be able to find a place to stop and buy a meal. That being said, you’ll have plenty of breathtaking views to enjoy while relaxing and getting a bite to eat.

When you’re able to see the stone steps, don’t get in too much of a hurry. They are both high and uneven. You’re going to want to pace yourself. The higher you get, the more difficult the climb becomes. Before you know it, the Pinnacles will be within your view.

Just when you think you can’t possibly make it any further, you’ll find a sign. “Pinnacles Hut 10 min.” So again, what are you going to do? Turn around and head back down or enjoy the day’s work you have accomplished?
