Renting a Campervan in the South Island

Renting a Campervan in the South Island

Written by mighway

When it comes to epic adventures, few places on Earth rival the majestic beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. If you would like to see these sights for yourself, one of the best ways to do this is with a campervan hire in the South Island. Overwhelmed by the amount of things there are to see? Hire a motorhome and we’ll give you a few ideas for your South Island adventure.

Lake Pukaki

While most people will tell you go to Lake Tekapo, the truth is that particular lake is usually pretty crowded due to its nearness to Christchurch. Instead, go about 30 minutes further south to Lake Pukaki. This beautiful area has crystal-clear waters and is flanked by Aoraki/Mount Cook, which provides a gorgeous backdrop (as well as your next destination).

Aoraki/Mount Cook

This mountain has two names — Aoraki being the Maori name, and Mount Cook the name given by settlers. No matter what you call it, this is the highest mountain in New Zealand, soaring over the landscape at over 12,000 feet. Really, you could spend your entire trip here and not run out of trails to hike, rivers to ford or scenic views to admire.

This bustling tourist town is always a great destination — but it can be pretty expensive to stay. This is where motorhome hire really works in your favour! Find a campground outside the city limits and go into town when you feel like it. At the same time, you’re close to some great places like Glenorchy.

Queenstown, New Zealand

The Milford Highway

This scenic drive offers some of the most spectacular sights in all of New Zealand. As you drive from place to place in your motorhome hire there is simply no end to the beauty and splendour the South Island can offer you. This road starts in Te Anau and goes all the way to the Milford Sound. Allow plenty of time for stopping to take in the view. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and plenty of provisions before you go — there aren’t many conveniences along the way!

The last place to talk about is Wanaka. This town, set picturesquely on the shores of Lake Wanaka, offers quaint shops and bakeries, beautiful scenery and a very quirky, famous tree (Look up the hashtag #ThatWanakaTree to see some images of this landmark). You can also hike around this lake and onto some of the mountains in the area, including Isthmus Peak and Roy’s Peak

As you can see, there’s plenty to do and see on the South Island. Motorhome hire is the best way to see them all, so why not contact us today?
