Motorhome Travel with Pets

Written by mighway

For many pet owners, the idea of taking an extended vacation without your loveable fur-babies is simply out of the question. That’s okay, though, because with a motorhome rental from Mighway you don’t have to leave Fido and Fluffy at home — you can bring them with you! Although it might take a little extra planning, motorhome hire with pets is possible. Travelling with your pets is a great way to experience the rich New Zealand countryside. Here are some tips to do it right:

Plan and Pack Ahead

Bringing your pets along means having to bring more gear. A LOT more gear. This is fine — the motorhome can hold it — but you’d be surprised at the number of things you need. Food, of course, but also toys, harnesses and other items that you don’t really think about at home. Make a list now and add to it as you think of things. As you go on your first pet-friendly trip, you’ll realise there were more items that you forgot. Add them to the list for your next trip.

Obey the Rules of the Road

Usually, a pet in the car means that you drive, they wander. However, when you’re in a large motorhome, the last thing you need is a distraction that can cause an accident. There are harnesses available that can keep your pet buckled and safe, which will make it easier for you to focus on the road.

Stop Frequently

Pets — especially ones that have been harnessed for safety — need time to roam and be free. Stopping frequently to let your pets walk and use the bathroom is a nice way of making sure they’re as comfortable as possible on your long trips.

Find Pet-Friendly Spots

Believe it or not, not every campsite is great for pets. When you travel, look for spots that have reviews from pet owners. Many campervan parks and campgrounds will go out of their way to welcome your furry companions, with dog walks, special treats and other amenities. Why go anywhere else?

Be Considerate

You may love your dog’s 2:00am howling sonatas, but I can assure you, your neighbour does not. Please be kind and courteous to those around you and discourage your pets from being noisy. In addition, many pets don’t understand the concept of personal space. Not everyone feels comfortable with unfamiliar animals roaming their campsite, so always make sure your pet is staying confined within your own borders.
