Top Kiwi Foods To Try On The Road

Renting a motorhome in New Zealand is the best way to travel. And, what could be better than tucking into a delicious meal and enjoying breathtaking views? Absolutely nothing. So, we have put together a list of tasty New Zealand delights, for you to enjoy right from your motorhome. See what’s on our menu.

Hokey Pokey Ice Cream

Ice cream is always at the beginning, middle and end of every motorhome journey. And, our top pick is a traditional Kiwi flavour – Hokey Pokey. The ice cream itself is vanilla, but it isn’t bland! With each bite, you will discover chunks of salty but sweet honeycomb. Our favourite Hokey Pokey ice cream is from the Rush Munro freezer.

Kiwi Burger

There is nothing more Kiwi than a Kiwi Burger. And, when we make these, it’s not about the presentation, it’s all about the flavour and the unbelievable taste.

The first layer of a Kiwi Burger is a chargrilled bun, ketchup, a little aioli and some fresh garden greens. The next layer is the best part. A pure New Zealand beef patty covered in melted cheese, a perfectly cooked egg and a splash of beetroot. It is a messy one, but a good one! We’ve even uncovered where to find the best Kiwi Burger – Burger Fuel. Otherwise, make it right from your motorhome.

Mince Pie

A mince pie is perfect for a cold winters day. Pop into the nearest bakery and choose from; mince, mince and cheese, steak, potato top or even a butter chicken pie. But, be careful with the first bite because these pack a lot of heat (temperature wise). You may even want to go back for seconds!

Fish and Chips

The great part about renting a motorhome in New Zealand is being able to park right next to the beach. And, a true Kiwi tradition is to enjoy your fish and chips on the beach. Most fish and chip shops around the country will produce fantastic greasy goodness, but for our best kept secret, request chicken salt on your chips. This seasoning will make the entire experience.

A pavlova consists of mostly egg whites and sugar. So, you could try and re-create this yourself. It may take a little skill, and you will need an oven in your motorhome, but give it a whirl. For the final touch top it off with a generous serving of cream, berries and some kiwifruit. If your pavlova is a fail, plenty of restaurants will serve this delicious Kiwi dessert.

Kiwi Onion Dip

This dip has been a Kiwi summer staple since the 1960’s. You simply cannot beat this chip and dip combo. And, we’re going to satisfy all your cravings with this unstoppable dip recipe. All you need is the below:

  1.  Can Reduced Cream, 250g.
  2. 1 pkt Onion Soup Mix.
  3. 1 tsp fresh lemon juice.

Add any flavour of chips and you’re away laughing. Easy to serve from your motorhome too!

Sausage Sizzle

If you don’t have time to prepare the barbecue yourself, then we suggest you head to Bunnings for the ultimate sausage sizzle. This may sound a little strange, why would you visit a hardware store for a sausage sizzle? Well, these are the best sausages around. Bunnings allow people to fundraise outside their stores with a sausage sizzle or a cake stand. The end result is a perfectly cooked sausage with all the toppings! You will not be disappointed.

These are only a few of the great Kiwi foods that you need to try while travelling New Zealand in your motorhome. But, for now, it is enough to get you started.
