After you pick up your motorhome from Christchurch, you’ll have three days to fill with adventure before returning the vehicle back to Christchurch. Here are some ideas for making your road trip unforgettable.
Head out early on day one and enjoy the beautiful drive from Christchurch to Greymouth. Along the way, you’ll see the Canterbury Plains, then wind your way up into the foothills of the Southern Alps. You’ll enjoy a scenery of lakes, rivers, and interesting geological features. Consider stretching your legs at Arthur’s Pass, the halfway point of your drive. Coming down from the mountains, you’ll notice the landscape becoming more green and lush. You’ve made it to the West Coast! Sea kayaking or whitewater rafting are fun activities for the whole family while you’re in Greymouth. After your day in Greymouth, you have the option of going north or south along the coastline. For this trip, we’re going south. If you’re exhausted from the day’s adventures, Greymouth Seaside Top 10 Holiday Park is a great place to stay.
On your second day of adventure, travel south through Jade Country and Glacier Country. Jade Country if full of fun activities for everyone to enjoy. For a relaxing day, you can go fishing on the Taramakau River. Get spectacular views of the scenery on the Treetop Walkway. Once you’ve had your fill of Jade Country, hop back in the motorhome and head to Glacier Country. With two glaciers framed by coastline and rainforest, Glacier Country is full of adventure activities. For a quieter activity, try birdwatching and see if you spot the rare White Heron. If you’re craving a rush, try the 2nd most scenic skydive in the world at Fox Glacier.
If you’ve got enough time left from day two, drive down to Haast and spend the night at the Haast River Top 10 Holiday Park. Before your drive back to Christchurch, spend some time on day 3 enjoying the bounties of nature around Haast. View fur seals, dolphins, and Fiordland Crested Penguins. Fishing and hunting are amazing in this area, and you can refuel with a delicious whitebait pattie.
If you love nature and exploration, there are countless things to do along the West Coast of the South Island outside of the towns and typical tourist activities. After your three-day trip, you may want to schedule an even longer adventure for next time.
