A Self Drive 4 Night Twin Coast Discovery Itinerary
Travelling along the Twin Coast Discovery Highway puts you in touch with some of the most picturesque scenery that New Zealand has to offer. The driving journey spans the course of five days and four nights.
We recommend you to use the following itinerary as a guide:
Your adventure begins as you leave Auckland and travel in the direction of the Kauri Museum in Matakohe. Upon arriving at the museum, you will enjoy learning the historical background of the majestic Kauri tree. There are also exhibits featuring the way of life for New Zealand pioneering settlers that place their heritage on display. When leaving the museum, you will be heading in the direction of the Footprints Waipoua, which features an impressive collection of Kauri trees. Navigate the tree farm with the assistance of local Maori tour guides and learn the value these trees provide to the Waipoua forest. As you leave the tree farm, begin preparing to make your first overnight stop of the trip. Overnight accommodations are available at the Opononi Beach Holiday Park.
The second day of your adventure focuses on travelling to Cape Reinga. As you arrive, you will spend the day at the point where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. With so much natural beauty to explore, it is easy to see why this destination point takes up most of day two on the trip. Overnight accommodations are available at the Hihi Beach Holiday Park in Cape Reinga.
As day three begins, you travel towards the Bay of Islands where you have three activities to select from for the day. You can go on a skydiving adventure, take a parasail flight over the bay or take a dolphin cruise to the ‘Hole in the Rock’ at the end of the Cape Brett Peninsula. The cruise features dolphins on 90 percent of their trips so it is likely the dolphins will be part of your boating adventure as well. Your third night of the journey brings you to accommodations in Waitangi Holiday park.
Day four of your adventure takes you to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds where you learn about the historic Treaty of Waitangi signing while taking in panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. Afterwards, enjoy a Waitangi Cultural Performance that features authentic Maori weapons, including a haka. When the historic tour finishes, drive to Tutukaka to spend your final night of the trip at the Tutukaka Holiday Park.
The final day of this adventure focuses on exploring the historic area of Tutukaka. It features exotic wildlife and opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and more. Explore the largest sea cave in the world before heading for home in the direction of Auckland.
