Dare to Bungy!

New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world, there’s no denying it. With epic hiking trails, world class snowboarding, jet boating, kayaking, white-water rafting and so much more, it has more than earned its reputation. When you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, New Zealand will provide it.

A Humble Beginning

Bungy jumping originated on the Pentecost island of Vanuatu as ‘Gol’, a traditional land-diving ritual to test one’s courage. But the first ever commercial operation was set up at Kawarau Bridge just outside of Queenstown by AJ Hackett in 1988, taking inspiration from this tradition. And what a place to jump; the scenery, the river, the excitement – it’s incredible!

Taking the Plunge

So you want to bungy, where do you go? There are three great options in and around Queenstown:

Kawarau Bridge

The 43metre bungy jump at the Kawarau Bridge is not the highest jump but trust us, your heart will still be in your mouth, your knees will tremble, and you will scream as you launch yourself off the bridge. The original bungy is an experience not to be missed.

The Ledge

If you’re looking for a bigger thrill, try out the 47m Ledge bungy off Bobs Peak. You’ll be treated to beautiful panoramic views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu on the gondola ride and at the bungy site – a welcome distraction from the nerves. If you’re feeling really adventurous, the Ledge is the only site to offer a night bungy option!

The Nevis

If Kawarau and the Ledge still seem too small then New Zealand’s highest bungy, the 134m Nevis River Bungy, is the bungy for you. With a 4×4 drive through sheep country required just to get to the bungy site, 8 full seconds of free fall, and a potential drop speed of 128km/hr, the Nevis is sure to get that adrenaline pumping!

AJ Hackett has a 100% safety record, so there’s no need to worry about anything going wrong. The team will put you at ease as you step into your harness and shuffle to the edge of the platform for the jump.

First Time?

If it’s your first time, no doubt you’ll be nervous. But you came this far, you can’t turn back, so just go for it! This is why you’re here. Don’t hesitate, just keep your eyes fixed on the horizon and listen to the instructions of the crew. Jump!

The Rush

That instant when you lean over the edge of the platform is what it’s all about. It’s the definition of being ‘in the moment’ – you won’t be able to think of anything else, all your worries wash away and for a few moments you are completely free. Adrenaline-based activities like bungy jumping all have this effect and it’s truly liberating. When the rope snaps back you’ll bounce around in the air screaming, laughing, and having the time of your life.

Should You Bungy?

YES! Without question. As scary as it may seem, it’s worth it. This is a true bucket-list activity, and New Zealand is where it all started. Don’t miss the chance to take the plunge in the home of commercial bungee jumping. As the AJ Hackett tagline goes “crazy if you do, crazy if you don’t,” and we couldn’t agree more.

We also have a short clip from our “On the Road” series, where our intrepid host Tim shows you what Queenstown and Glenorchy have to offer when you get out of the city.
