Summer is the perfect time to experience the beauty of New Zealand.  There is no better way than to take the scenic route and jump in the car.  Make sure that your trip is enjoyable and stress-free, by making use of these tips.

Plan Your Route

The best way to ensure an enjoyable ride is to plan your route ahead of time. Knowing exactly what roads you wish to take, will enable you to allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination. Gather information in advance on road closures and construction. Be aware of the well-traveled routes that will add time to your journey.

Share the Driving

If possible on a long journey, ask someone in the vehicle to take over the drive for awhile. Fatigue can prove fatal on the roadway. If necessary make an overnight stop to ensure you are well rested for the drive.

Enjoy the Sights

Make sure you also leave plenty of time to enjoy the sights along the way. This not only adds to the enjoyment but it will give you a nice break from the stress of driving. Stretch your legs, take a walk, have a beverage or a snack.

Keep Hydrated & Fuelled

Speaking of snacks make sure you pack plenty of water. Water is the best way to hydrate when the weather is hot and that summer sun is shining through the windows. If your journey is long, be sure to pack some portable snacks to curb hunger until you can stop and dine. Healthy choices are fruit, nuts, dark chocolate and cut carrots and celery. If kids are along, sandwiches are a good option to satisfy their appetites.

Keep Kids Occupied

If kids are coming along, make sure you have a plan to keep them content. Road games are a good choice, such as the perennial favorite “I Spy”. Dress the little ones comfortably in loose fitting clothes and make sure they are secure in their seats. Long trips may call for a nap so be sure to bring along blankets and pillows.

First Aid Kit is a Must!

A first aid kit is also essential when travelling with children. You can always buy a kit pre packaged but they are easily assembled. Choices can be bandages, sterile wipes, tweezers, scissors, safety pins, pain reliever and an antiseptic spray.

Sun Protection

An essential for summer in New Zealand is sun protection. The sun can be brutal so pack plenty of sunscreen. Protect your skin with coverings such as a light long sleeve shirt. Include a hat and some sunglasses for further protection. Insects can also be a problem in the heat so pack up that bug repellent.

Wherever you travel in New Zealand keep in mind that beaches or a lake are just minutes away. So enjoy!  There is nothing better to cool off and relax. Add all the beach necessities along for the ride.
