Your Inside Guide to White Island

Our intrepid host, Tim went on a White Island Tour and had an amazing time. We recommend  the luxury cruiser ‘PeeJay’ to start your adventure. This tour lasts between five to six hours and explores New Zealand’s only active marine volcano – White Island.

White Island is located 49km off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is one of the world’s most accessible volcanoes because of its position and where it is located. Because the majority of the volcano sits beneath the sea, the tour is able to go directly into the crater complex, with absolutely no mountain climbing necessary.

White Island is home to New Zealand’s most amazing geothermal activity.

Pick up your motorhome in Auckland and venture down to Rotorua to book your overnight stay at Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park. If you are looking for something to do during your stay for the night, check out Polynesian Spas and relax in one of Rotorua’s best thermal hot pools. If you’re planning an extended stay, there are plenty of great sights to see in the area. Start the next day with an early 1 hour drive to the White Island Tours office (15 The Strand, Whakatane).

Your Journey to White Island

People who come to visit and go on our tours are able to get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid. This place is every photographer’s dream because of the beautiful yellow and oranges hues that come from the large amount of sulphur on the island.

Upon exploring you will be with an experienced tour guide, and about an hour and a half is spent exploring the inner crater of the volcano.

This gives visitors time to explore and learn about the geology of the island. They will also get to listen to stories about the history of mining sulphur. On this part of the tour, you will see volcanic and geothermal features and the remains of the sulphur factory. The sulphur factory has survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the early 1930s.

After this, the tour goes back to PeeJay, and if you would like, you can go for a swim before your lunch is served. This is all done while viewing the outer walls of the island where Pohutukawa forests grow and where Australasian Gannet colonies are.

During the trip home, you usually get to see dolphins, whales, and a lot of other marine life. We hold the necessary government permits to interact with these animals, so no worries for you!If you are looking for somewhere new and exciting to go on vacation, this is the place to go! This will be a great vacation for anyone, even the kids! It’s also a rather educational experience as well as a fun time for everyone.
