New Zealanders are pretty serious about their pies.  The 19th annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards were held in 2015, and is sure to be held far into the future to identify some of the best pies in the country.  Meat pies, veggie pies, fruit pies.  There is a little something for everyone on this list.    

New World Greenmeadows in Taradale

The supreme gold winner of the 2015 pie contest with the potato top pie should be first on your list if visiting the area.  You may be a little surprised when you first pull up to this location as it happens to be a grocery store called New World Greenmeadows.  Try out some award winning potato top pie before you restock your campervan or motorhome by wandering down the aisles to see what other tasty treats you can find. 

Dairy Flat Bakery in Albany

The Dairy Flat Bakery wowed the judges with several pies earning top marks in several categories: Mince & Gravy, Chicken & Vegetable, Gourmet Fruit, Vegetarian and Bacon & Egg.  One review noted that they don’t let a trip of over a half an hour stop them from enjoying their steak, mushroom, and bacon pie.    

Fresh Bun Café in Tuakau

The Fresh Bun Cafe knocked it out of the park with two gold awards, a bronze and fifth place.  A tip from one frequent visitor is to visit early to try to get your pies piping hot from the oven.

Pak n Save in Petone

A gold winner in the steak and cheese category along with four other wins, the Pak n Save located in Petone is another grocery store.  With the lofty aim of providing the lowest food prices, this is another great stop on your trip to stock up and taste some amazing pies.   

The Bakehouse Café in Thames

The Bakehouse Café earned a gold award in the mince & gravy category.  Visitors love the varied menu that has a little something for everyone. 

Your escapades in New Zealand can be a hefty appetite builder, so it only makes sense to visit one of these award-winning bakeries, cafes or grocery stores.  Not near enough to visit one of the Gold Medalists during your travels?  You are sure to be wowed by any of the top ten winners category winners from the competition in 2015.  If pie is not everyone in your party’s top food choice, there is sure to be something else on the menu that will catch their fancy.  Don’t just be adventurous during your travels with the things you do, but take some time to experience one of the dishes that Kiwis really love: pie.
